In addition to a long career as a respected psychiatrist, Greenbrier Almond, MD, became a member of the Upshur County Board of Education in 2010. Having authored many books in the popular “Stories of a West Virginia Doctor” series, in 2013 he began writing a newspaper column “Lessons Learned Serving on the Board of Education.” Initially a way to educate the public on the school system in anticipation of a levy vote, his effort turned into a weekly column. Dr. Almond addresses universal themes such as education, community, rural living, and lifelong learning. This book contains 54 of his columns. Alongside are 27 full-color reproductions of artwork by award-winning local artist and teacher Violet Coonts. The late Mrs. Coonts was Dr. Almond’s first journalism teacher. Her art offers a stunning view into life in the hills of West Virginia.
